I really want to try this... my usual go-to for cold weather babywearing is an extra large fleece zip up jacket... but this looks much cuter and more suited to back carries (I have to wear my fleece jacket backwards and have somebody else zip it up, so...).

Ring Sling Love

Guest Post: Newborn Back Wrapping

Wrapping a newborn baby on my back? Am I crazy?

While I love the snuggles I can get from wrapping my tiny baby on my front I also need the convenience of having my arms truly free to help my toddler and preschooler with basic tasks and not having to peer over and around the baby. For me, the safest place to put my baby in this situation is on my back.

Getting a newborn baby on your back is much easier than you think it is! One of the best things about wrapping such a small baby is their lack of mobility. Once you get them on your back they stay where you put them until you can get them securely wrapped up.

My favorite method for getting a tiny baby up onto your back in a wrap safely and easily is the Santa Toss method. A terrific video tutorial for this can be found here at the bottom of this page. (Disclaimer: Yes, this is a stretchy wrap. Its a hybrid and one of only 2 brands I know of that are appropriate for back carrying in for experienced babywearers. For safety's sake though, please never back carry any size baby in a stretchy wrap!!!)

Once baby is safely on your back I like to position baby so that his or her head lays against the nape of my neck. I carry my own babies legs out in all carries right from birth so after baby is safely positioned I double check to make sure there is a good amount of wrap over baby's bottom. My preferred carry is the Reinforced Ruck as shown in this YouTube video.

As baby grows and I am able to start to spread the hips more I just reach up as I am making my reinforcing passes and spread the legs open by pushing up on the bottom of the feet. A snug wrap over them will help keep the legs positioned nice a spread. My own baby is now 4 months old and I still leave my passes open over her legs instead of crossing under them like I do with bigger babies.
Getting the newborn baby off your back is done just the same as with bigger kids. I just unwrap all but the first pass over the baby and then shimmy baby into the crook of my arm and bring her around front. Here is a video demonstrating this.

With a little bit of practice wearing small babies on your back should be just as easy (if not easier!) than wearing the big kids!

Back carry, 31 weeks

Pardon my windblown hair and her odd face (I think she wanted us to just get on with our walk and stop taking pictures!), but here I am, 31 weeks with #3, with my almost 2 year old on my back in a podaegi. I find it most comfortable to tie my mei tais and podaegis above the belly during pregnancy, and was able to continue wearing through most of my last pregnancy. I did mostly back carries, and as one person pointed out "balanced myself out" with a baby on the front and a baby on the back. ;)

Have you done any babywearing during pregnancy? What are your favorite carries/carriers/tips for that?

Babywearing on a Budget

Let's be honest. Carriers can be expensive, and pretty much everyone has a wishlist, right? Before you know it, you've moved on from eying a Maya Wrap doubtfully, wondering if it would really be worth the $50, to realizing that a good carrier is truly priceless and a good investment and thinking that it sounds like a bargain in exchange for hands free cuddle time and comfort as you go about your daily life.

But no matter how convinced you may be that a good carrier is worth the money, it doesn't really matter in the long run if you can't afford it. And, even though I think that babywearing is fantastic for you and your baby, I'm not going to recommend you go into debt to babywear!

Fortunately, there are alternatives... of course, I've sewn most of my carriers, as you can see by looking at my DIY Carrier research page, but not everyone can sew, or has access to a sewing machine.

So here are some simple, frugal, no sew babywearing options.

First, a no sew wrap. The page I link goes into how to select an appropriate fabric for a no sew wrap, and also talks about how if simple sewing is an option, you can select different fabrics and hem the wrap.

Here I am with my then 6 month old, using an unhemmed, uncut piece of cotton 5 1/2 yards long. I've since narrowed it and hemmed it, making two wraps from the fabric.

My guess is that each wrap cost me about $8.25, but it could be done for less if you found appropriate fabric for less.

Occasionally, Walmart craft sections will have a $1/yd section, so you could make a wrap for as little as $5.50 (depending on the width of the fabric, possibly two, although I doubt much of that fabric is wide enough for that.) Frequently that fabric is ugly or poor quality, however- make sure you read over the page on how to choose fabrics carefully before picking!

Alternatively, many fabric stores have frequent coupons good for one cut of fabric that can dramatically reduce your cost. Watching the sales is also a good tactic... I just got an email about a sale at Hancock Fabric 2/17-2/20 that has a few fabrics 50% off.

If you use a sturdy, non stretchy fabric, you can also learn to back carry with your wrap! Learning to back wrap isn't always easy, but once you get it figured out it is great. Practice in front of a mirror with a doll or teddy bear to get the hang of it, then have a spotter or or maybe practice while sitting on a mattress the first few times.

For a comfortable longer wearing period, I love doing a back carry in a wrap! The back wrap cross carry is my favorite~ I love this version with a chest belt.

Stretchy wraps, while great for newborns (Moby Wrap review here) are really NOT safe for back carries.

Whatever fabric you choose for your wrap, it's important to check for signs of wear regularly, like with any carrier, and make sure it's still sturdy and safe.

While a wrap is the simplest carrier to make, I was surprised to find other choices for no sew carriers! On The Babywearer's great page on sewing and improvising baby carriers, I found a link to Jan Andrea's No- Sew Ring Sling, as well as a no sew babywearing poncho that I would love to try out myself.

For purchased carriers on a budget, you can check consignment events (I saw a Maya Wrap at the last one I was at for about $25), the FSOT forums on The Babywearer, or buy an Infantino Wrap and Tie (their version of the mei tai) for $30. Generally Infantino has a bad reputation in the babywearing community but it seems that the Wrap and Tie is a good carrier since many people really like theirs, and that is considerably less expensive than most mei tais.

I don't recommend getting a cheap structured carrier like this, or a Seven Sling (check out this review), however... short term savings aren't worth it for a carrier that won't be comfortable, durable, and versatile. As your grandmother might have said, that's "bad economy." ;)

Good Positioning Matters!

I think the number one problem people have with babywearing (besides not having a good carrier to start out with, in many cases!) is not having correct positioning. That can make even a fantastic carrier uncomfortable for the wearer, and uncomfortable or even unsafe for your little passenger.

Slingbabies has a very comprehensive page on The Importance of Positioning in a Carrier that really covers not just how to position, but why certain positions (and carriers) are not ideal for babies spines. Here are their top three essential aspects of positioning, but the whole thing is a great read:

Baby's legs should always be in a frog position, bottom down knees up, straddling you, with legs up at a 90° angle to the spine. (except for in cradle carries) This is the best, most correct and most desirable position for baby. [later it is noted that "before they are approx 11-12 weeks old, babies' legs are better to be tucked inside the carrier, up underneath them as they would be when you hold them in-arms."]
Baby should be high and snug in any carrier.
A good baby carrier will mimic the way you hold baby naturally in your arms.

I know that having these three top tips summarized for me was really helpful, especially thinking through helping new mamas babywear at first! Wish I'd read this before I started babywearing... it would have made it clear faster that my heavily padded, barely adjustable sling was not a good carrier, and maybe sped me on in getting a really good ring sling, which made a huge difference with my second baby!

Is it just me, or is there always another carrier that looks really appealing? Always one more to try? :)

Here are my "wish" carriers right now...

I have a green Moby Wrap, but I'd love to have a black one that would be slightly dressier and go with more of my dress clothes. Of course, a

Woven wrap is also on my wish list, so maybe a black woven would be a better investment. Hmm.

ERGObaby carrier. A very few people have expressed that they don't like this carrier because they're short/have a short torso (and I'm 5' 3", so that does make me wonder if I'd like it), but the overwhelming consensus seems to be that most babywearers love their ERGO. So I'd like to try one, especially as I've never tried a structured carrier.

Wrap-tie or wrap-pod. I have mei tais, and podaegis, but frequently after periods of extended wear the straps become uncomfortable on my shoulders. I've thought about adding padding, but I think I would prefer one with wrap straps as I'm sure that would fix that issue, and combine the ease of a mei tai or podaegi back carry with the comfort and versatility of a wrap. The Maya Tie looks good, but since I've sewn myself several mei tais I'd probably just make a wrap tie myself since it wouldn't be much different to sew.

Nigerian Babies in 1931...

I've been reading 'Infant Potty Training: A Gentle and Primeval Method Adapted to Modern Living' in preparation for our next baby (#3, expected April/May), and have been fascinated with the last section that looks at babies around the world. Of course, their focus is on the pottying of the babies but since many of the same cultures wear their babies there are lots of little glimpses into that.

Here is a passage from field research conducted on the topic of native life among the Dahomey (in Nigeria) during a period of five months in 1931...

Unless prevented by special circumstances, a mother takes her baby with her wherever she goes, and women may be seen selling in the market, carrying burdens on the road, working in the fields, or dancing in ceremonial dances with their infants straddling their backs." Babywearing While Traveling

We just got home from a fun trip out of town... here we all are babywearing at the mall! Front to back: my handsome husband wearing our 2 1/2 year old son in a DIY mei tai, me (17 weeks pregnant) wearing our 18 month old daughter in a DIY non stretchy wrap!

We ended up going up and down several escalators and a flight of stairs, so we were very glad to be babywearing. Also, three different people stopped us to ask about our carriers!

If you're a beginner...

here are some tips from experienced babywearers that may be helpful...

I said... "working on post for beginners on #babywearing... what tips would you give someone just starting out?"

emilye: If you can't figure a carrier out, don't just give up & throw in the towel. Seek help from a babywearing group!

tristina_wright: Walk and bounce immediately. Don't stand there admiring yourself in the mirror. Baby will get fussy.

tea4tamara: Sometimes babies fuss at first. Practice when they aren't hungry or tired. Once baby is in the carrier, get moving! :)

Kt_Ri: experiment without a baby first, use a mirror & relax so the baby can too :)

JoyfulAbode: if possible find a #babywearing "mentor" locally. If not, YouTube vids are your friend. Also if they don't like one style it doesn't mean they don't like #babywearing. They should try other styles of carriers before giving up on it.

posielove: Don't give up just bc baby fusses in beginning. It's new and takes practice!

SoleilSelene: don't get a Bjorn! =)

AVPH: don't give up. If one carrier doesn't work then try try again!

Babywearing Needs YOU

Every family has a story, and babywearing is intertwined through ours. We knew from the first awestruck moments after birth that this precious little one needed us and we scooped him in and never wanted to let him go.

Unfortunately, we didn't really want to let the laundry, dishes, housework, etc, completely go to pot either. Also, our arms got tired. He was born 8 pounds, 3 ounces and gained a pound a week for his first several weeks of life!

So babywearing entered our lives, and we are profoundly grateful for the connection, for the ease, for the bonding, for the portability, for the natural-ness, of the babywearing way of life.

From chasing cows to coping with a child in the hospital, babywearing is an integral part of how we parent.

Our first baby, pictured in the first two pictures, is now 2 1/2, and most of the time much happier to be on his own two feet (which is fine with us, since he's also 30 pounds now)!

Our second baby, who was born 12 months after our first, is in the next photo solo and in the one after being worn with her older brother. By the time she came along, I'd really found my babywearing groove, and was excited to be able to wear her a lot more than her brother. Tandem babywearing really made our year of two under two much, much easier.

When our second was born, our first had been walking for a week. There was no way he could toddle all the way across a parking lot, far less walk through a store. And if you've ever tried to navigate a stroller through a crowded, treasure laden thrift store (starting by getting in, the doors aren't automatic!), you'll understand why strapping 35 pounds of baby to your torso is comparatively easy.

I didn't want to be homebound just because I had two very small children, and thanks in large part to babywearing, I wasn't.

And I not only shed the baby weight pretty quickly (try squatting down to get a can on a bottom shelf at the discount grocery with 35 pounds of extra weight and you'll see why!), I enjoyed making fun memories with them at the same time.

When we recently found out that we're expecting #3 next spring, among all of the wonderful things we're looking forward to one of them is wearing a snuggly little newborn again! My husband laughed at me when I said that... and then later admitted that he's really looking forward to getting to babywear a newborn too! He loves the Moby wrap, and this time around I'm trading another carrier with a cousin for a pretty indigo Moby. Can't wait!

I know I've been rather silent around here, between morning sickness, a horrific cold *achoo!*, and a broken camera, so you might be wondering what brought me out of the woodwork today.

Babywearing is in crisis, and just as babywearing helped us, we need to turn around and help the babywearing industry stay beautiful, vibrant, and diverse.

While I've made many of my own carriers, not every mama can, and we need a variety of big and small babywearing businesses that can provide those families with the tools they need. When I'm stopped on the street and asked about my carriers, frequently I say, "I made this one, but you can buy a similar one from (fill in the blank depending on the type.)" Often that person will write it down or take one of my babywearing cards with more information.

Losing those businesses due to expensive testing, prohibitive regulation, or sheer bureaucracy is not acceptable.

What will I do if I can't refer them to somewhere they can buy a similar carrier anymore? Or if eventually even sharing patterns and tutorials for DIY carriers is curtailed because of regulation? How will that harm babywearing? Quite frankly, I don't know and I don't want to find out.

Long story short, the CPSC is trying to regulate the babywearing industry, and there is a huge risk that many of our favorite carriers will go the way of the buffalo (or Hotslings.)

Babywearing is a safe, traditional way of parenting babies, and the CPSC needs to let parents parent. Babywearing is a parenting choice, and by restricting our access to carriers, the CPSC is going to limit our ability as parents to choose what we feel is best for our babies. This is totally unacceptable.

As things develop we may need to write letters or make phone calls, but right now, we need to connect, share our stories, and speak out about the joys of babywearing.

Babywearers recently said a sad farewell to Hotslings after seven years, causing many to wonder about the future of the babywearing market and whether upcoming safety regulations and testing requirements, as well as the after effects of the Infantino recall, would force us to lose other baby carrier businesses.

Diana from WrapYourBaby.com puts it well in her post... as she says, "the Baby Carrier Industry Alliance (BCIA) was formed by the mothers and fathers behind some of the most innovative and well-loved baby carriers available, to set the standards for babywearing devices before the companies that are home-based, and which started out home-based (like Hotslings) can be edged out of the market..."

As the BCIA says,

"The closure of Hotslings highlights the important work to be done in the baby carrier industry to ensure its health and stability. The BCIA is working hard to develop safe and achievable standards for all sling carriers through the ASTM and to help the baby carrier industry grow. Additionally, the BCIA is working to bring accurate information about the importance of baby slings for the well-being of infants and families to the general public, media, and medical communities."

The BCIA is needed to make sure that safety regulations take into account the needs of small businesses. Safe babywearing is a beautiful goal, but losing all of our work at home mom babywearing businesses, losing Etsy sellers with unique products, or even losing larger companies like Hotslings, that started out as a mom at a kitchen table, is not the answer. What baby carriers are truly unsafe?

The recalled Infantino SlingRider wasn't made or sold by a mother who loved babywearing and had a passion for it. It was made and sold by a BIG COMPANY that wanted to make a profit and ignored babywearing advocates concerns about it's safety and bad design. I don't know about you, but I would rather put my confidence in mothers who love babywearing, and are doing all they can to promote it and spread it, than in big, impersonal corporations with an eye on profits.

Oh How I LOVE a Back Carry!

I love babywearing. Plain and simple. And I especially love it when you get to that point in your baby's development and your babywearing ability when you can back carry. Back carrying takes babywearing to the next level in my mind. It gives you even more freedom to move around and get things done and still have your baby or toddler safe and secure on you in a carrier. And it gives your baby a whole new view of their world! Babywearing is of course a skill and does have a learning curve to it and back carrying takes some practice to get it just right. Using an appropriate baby carrier is always the first step and here are my opinions of the three kinds of carriers I use for back carries: a soft-structured carrier (the ERGObaby), a Mei Tai, and a woven, non-stretchy wrap.

A soft structured carrier is a great option for back carrying. There are some excellent carriers on the market these days in this category, but the most popular one by far is probably still the ERGObaby. The Ergo has been on the market for almost 7 years and has been tweaked a bit here and there, but still has the original structural design that is tried and true and ergonomically correct for babies. Here is what the ERGObaby website has to say about it:

ERGObaby’s baby carrier design supports a natural sitting position for babies, eliminating compression of the spine and hips that can be caused by unsupported suspension. The baby carrier also balances the baby's weight to parents' hips and shoulders, and alleviates physical stress for the parent.

I have used an Ergo for both my kids and as far as wearing them on my back comfortably for LONG periods of time (anything over an hour) and also for traveling, I think the Ergo is probably the most comfortable and convenient carrier to use or take with you. I wore my 28 pound, 23 month old daughter in it today for a 2 hour babywearing walk and never felt like it was causing stress on any part of my back, hips or shoulders. And she was so comfy in it that little Miss "I NEVER nap in the morning" slept for a good hour in it!

My one criticism of the Ergo is the shorter body on it. For most babies the back comes up to just at or under the armpits or shoulder blades. I personally would not use it for back carries until my child was at least 9-12 months old and did not run the risk of arching back in the carrier and at least had better muscle development around the spine. This is just my personal opinion, the manufacturer states that you can use it from 6 months. And again all of this is dependent on your baby and all baby's develop differently. The ERGO does come with a sleeping hood for baby, but I find it a little hard to put the hood up if baby falls asleep while you are carrying them on your back and always end up asking for help with it.

If our looking for something that has all the same benefits of the ERGO, as in supporting a natural sitting position and balancing baby's weight to the parents hips and shoulders, but has less buckles and snaps, then a Mei Tai or Asian-Style baby carrier may be what you are looking for. The Mei Tai is a traditional baby carrier used in a lot of Asian countries and there are many different brands and styles now available in the North American market.

All Mei Tais have the same general structure of a rectangle body panel with two shorter waist straps and two longer shoulder straps. The Mei Tai is a very versatile carrier and can generally be used from newborn to toddlerhood and as a front, hip or back carrier. It is also a very easy carrier to get on and off as a back carry. I wore my daughter in our Mei Tai for a 4-day Folk Festival adventure last year and seriously could not have survived that weekend without it. We would walk from stage to stage and up and down a HUGE hill multiple times a day and each time I would have to get her into the carrier on my back and then down again and it was fast and fantastic. I also really like that a Mei Tai is essentially a one size fits all carrier and can fit me, my husband or even grandma when she wants to try it out! One of the things that some people do not like about Mei Tais is crossing the straps across your chest when doing a back carry. There are other options to this though and tying the straps like a back pack (under your arms) is one. My new favourite Mei Tai at the moment is one I got from my good friend at Cosy Baby, Happy Mommy. She makes the shoulder straps of her Mei Tais slightly padded AND extra wide making them very comfortable to wear when crossed in the front-even if you are bigger in the chest like me!

And finally what I have found the be the most addictive of the baby carriers and my go-to carriers most days now for back carries....the woven wrap!

I will fully admit that I did not use my beautiful Storchenwiege woven wrap to do a back carry more than once or twice with my first born. I never fully got the hang of it and could not get it tightened enough to make me feel comfortable wearing him in it on my back. Like I said before babywearing is a learned skill and I guess at that point I still had a lot to learn! When I started my business (I own Natural Urban Mamas), I realized that I would have to get a lot better at this and have since taken a Babywearing Educator course and with the help of my incredible mentor, Arie Brentnall-Compton of Tadpoles and Butterflies, I have discovered how much I LOVE, love, love doing back carries with woven wraps.

For one thing, these carriers are beautiful! The quality and craftsmanship of most of the European woven wraps is unparalleled and one can go a bit crazy for these carriers (I now have 5!). And the versatility is also amazing, pretty much any carry you want to do can be accomplished with a wrap. And there are different kinds of back carries you can do as well. The most common is the Ruck carry and this can also sometimes be the most elusive for some people, but once it is mastered it is simply awesome and can be done quickly and easily regardless of where you are (you can often see me doing it in the parking lot before heading into the grocery store!). I also like the Secure High Back Carry with a wrap as it provides 2 extra layers of support and the straps are securely crossed at your sternum.

Back carrying in a wrap is a learned skill and that would be the one drawback with these carriers. If you do not want to invest the time or effort into learning to do this kind of carrying, then a wrap may not be for you for back carrying. If you do want to learn more, I have attached a few resources at the bottom of this post and I would also suggest you find a local babywearing group or meeting and get some advice or hands-on instruction from a seasoned babywearer or babywearing educator.

Like the Mei Tai and the soft structured carrier, using a wrap for back carrying puts baby in the right, seated, knees above hips position and provides you the wearer with properly distributed weight across both your shoulders and your hips. And in the end that is what is needed when doing any kind of back carrying, what you choose to use as your carrier is dependent on personal preference, lifestyle and often budget. I have used all three of these types of carriers with my kids and think that there is a time and place for each one and I personally like to switch it up and wear a different one every time!

Moby Wrap Review

I was so happy when a friend gave me a Moby wrap with my second baby... I had heard so many good things about it and it seemed like the perfect newborn carrier. I was not disappointed! While it took me a few tries to get the wrap tight enough the first few times, once I had it down it was easy.

The Moby wrap is soft, versatile, and can be a lifesaver with two small children! My baby loved being snuggled up to my chest peacefully napping while I chased her brother or grocery shopped. I found that if I put the Moby on before leaving the house, that I could just take her out of the carseat when I got to the store, put her in, maybe tighten it if needed, and be ready to go without having to try to put it on in the parking lot without dragging it in the dirt.

The Moby wrap is, in my opinion, the BEST infant carrier. I have ring slings, which I love for 6 months and up, but for new little babies I just love the Moby's softness, the snugness with a floppy little newborn, and how comfortable it is for long periods. After about 9 months or 20 lbs I would rather use a ring sling or mei tai, but for the newborn period, the Moby ROCKS. I traded the one I had with my daughter for another carrier, but I am definitely going to get another Moby wrap before our next baby! I think it is a baby *must have*.

Wearing a Hospitalized Child

I do not have very much experience babywearing in the hospital, and to be honest, I hope I don't have an opportunity for more.

But I think this might be a helpful topic to discuss, like thinking through what your preferences would be if you needed to have a c-section, or thinking about what your course of action would be if you have trouble breastfeeding, and who you'd contact.

I don't like thinking about kids in the hospital, having a c-section, or having breastfeeding difficulties, but I do think it can be a good idea to think through some scenarios and discuss options. Plus, I'm looking forward to hearing YOUR experiences, if any, with babywearing in the hospital!

My son Nathan was hospitalized for 10 days (story here, update #1, update #2) due to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. For most of the time, he had an IV in his arm, and for part of the time he was on dialysis (peritoneal dialysis, so through a tube inserted in his stomach). He also had lots of monitors, on his toe, on his chest, all over, for much of the time.

We started out at a small local ER, and I wore him in my ring sling into the ER, in the waiting room, and for some of the initial things, like having his temperature taken. Once we settled into a room, he hung out on the bed and calmly watched tv... a testament both to how little tv he watches, and to how sick and lethargic he was.

The photo above is of the only time I wore him during the whole hospitalization. He was feeling very lethargic and disoriented, and out of the blue said "mei tai?" At that point he only had an IV, so it wasn't hard to put him on. I did a front carry both because it gave more face time and snuggliness, and also because his platelets were dangerously low. I have never dropped a baby or child while putting them in a back carry, and he is generally very good about cooperating when being put on, but I still opted for the easier front carry. He snuggled in the mei tai for at least ten minutes, and it was a wonderful connection for both of us.

The night that this photo was taken, we were waiting to be transported three hours away to a PICU at a hospital that could do pediatric dialysis. Once we got to the PICU he was on far too many monitors for holding him to be easy, far less wearing, and he was also much more lethargic and did not ask to be held or worn, although he did want me to lie next to him on the bed and snuggle.

Wearing also made the hospital experience easier in that Micah was able to pop Miriam into either the ring sling or our HugaMonkey and still have hands for diaper bags and water bottles. I'm sad I didn't get any pictures of him wearing her while there... it was good for me to see that she was doing fine and getting snuggles, even if she was getting less mama than usual.

Babywearing Stories: Lessons from my daughter

It isn’t much of an exaggeration to say my daughter taught me nearly everything I know about babywearing. After all, babywearing can vary greatly between mothers and children—even children in the same family. It only makes sense to begin the learning process with the baby.

I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I made the decision to wear my daughter. Prior to her birth, I was interested in slings, registered for a Hotslings pouch sling, and thought that, yes, this is what I would do—for convenience if nothing else. How useful was my stroller going to be during a New Hampshire winter anyway? I didn’t really know any babywearers—I had seen celebrities wear their babies in slings, but that was the extent of my experience. Well, that and reading the Sears' Baby Book.

C was born in late January, no complications, no problems—she was completely perfect. She ate well, which is to say she ate all the time. This led to lots of holding. My mother would tell me, “Put that baby down. She needs to sleep. You need to sleep.” And these things were all true, but when I put her down, she’d wake and cry. And I’d pick her up and nurse her and the cycle would begin anew.

By two weeks post-partum I had lost over 30 pounds and started thinking that I should really be better about eating. After all, if I didn’t eat, the baby wasn’t going to eat. But how do you eat when your arms are full of sleeping or nursing baby? That’s when I remembered the sling that I registered for and someone kindly purchased prior to the baby’s arrival. Lo and behold—it worked!

Many babies dislike pouch slings. They’re deceptive in their simplicity. For me, it was a good first sling, because all I had to do was put it on. I was fortunate that the one I had fit correctly and that my daughter liked the cradle hold. Many babies don’t—and, in fact, it’s a hold that you need to be particularly vigilant when using to make sure the baby is positioned correctly and her airway is clear. But C loved it. And, with the use of a hand (and sometimes two hands), I got to start eating occasional meals again. And read books. And knit. All while holding my baby.

My town is not stroller-friendly, which I discovered the first (and last) time I tried to take her for a walk downtown and a cup of coffee. Brick sidewalks, steps, curbs, and small shops do not contribute to a comfortable experience for a brand new mother and a brand new baby. With the sling, I could be an all-terrain Mama. And if the baby needed to nurse, I could do it discreetly—without having to take her out of an infant seat or a stroller.

Eventually, we added other carriers to our mix. I bought a mei-tai for gardening so I could wear her on my back—C hated it. I bought a Scootababy hip carrier because C favored hip carries above all else. I bought a ring sling when it became clear that the pouch sling, though it says it works for kids up to 35 lbs, wasn’t cutting it any longer. I asked for (and received) a Beco for Christmas so that I could wear the squirmy Miss C on my back when she needed holding and I needed to cook dinner or do laundry. I bought a wrap carrier because I thought I should try it out, and I recently bought an Ergo because I’ve been having back troubles and wanted to try one more thing before I cut back on the babywearing.

My husband rolls his eyes at my collection of carriers, but he also recognizes how important babywearing has been to me and to our daughter. From the very beginning, she has been a child who thrives on touch and who needs to be held. When I went back to work after my 12 weeks of Family Medical Leave, I worried about how she would adapt and how I would adapt to the hours when she wouldn’t be in my arms. Every night when we got home, I would nurse her and wear her until it was time for bed. When C became mobile, she would bring me a sling if she wanted to be held.

My daughter is a cheerful, social, and active 18 month old. She still loves to be held and I still love to hold her. Because she is used to being worn, she is used to being where the action is, and she has a smile and a wave for everyone we meet. Everyone knows C—which I’m not sure would be the case if I had kept her knee-high in a stroller. What’s more, everywhere we go, we receive compliments on how well-behaved our daughter is. And I’ve had people ask my secret. Well—here it is: Listen to your child. When C gets tired or overwhelmed, she starts to melt down. Babywearing gives her safety, security, and a way to recharge. Babywearing can bypass a tantrum. Because at the end of the day, no place is better than Mama’s arms and nothing is better than a snuggly baby.

Home again, home again...

Thank you all for your comments and prayers during Nathan's hospital stay. We are HOME! And he is doing very well. We are still adjusting into a new routine, of weighing him daily, checking his blood pressure, and giving him (only one!) medication, as well as needing to go to pediatrician and kidney specialist visits.

(As a humorous aside, at his kidney specialist appointment yesterday the nurse loved my sling and I shared one of my babywearing info cards with her... she was interested in making a sling for a niece, I believe! I was happy that she was interested and more than happy to share a card with her that had some pattern links and my contact info.) :)

Anyway, his wonderful pediatric kidney specialist has repeatedly assured us that he is extremely happy with Nathan's progress, that he thinks that he will have no lasting damage, and that he is recovering quickly. We are going to have to have his peritoneal dialysis tube removal surgery in a few weeks, and then I know that I will feel like we're getting back to normal.

In the meantime, as things in our life get back to normal, so will things around here. So stay tuned for posts on babywearing the hospitalized child, babywearing the sibling of a hospitalized child, and babywearing ages and stages!

Nathan Update

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth many many more, right? Here is Nathan this afternoon. Off dialysis (for today and tonight... praying that his levels will have continued to improve by tomorrow so that we can stay off altogether!), unhooked from all the wires (for at least part of the day) and able to get up and play! He is a bit wobbly and needs close attention (he thinks he can do everything, but he's still a bit weak and his balance is a bit off. Anyway... here is some amazing Nathan cuteness. Thank you so so so much for your prayers.

We are hopeful that if he continues to improve at this rate that we may be able to go home soon.

Please pray that...

his blood pressure would stay within the normal range so we can stop the blood pressure medication
his body would be able to heal itself from this point, and his kidneys would be able to handle things from here on out without the help of dialysis.
that his anemia would go away without another transfusion (we've had 4 so far)
that there would be no long term damage to his kidneys or his health
that we would be able to go home soon!
that we would be able to find a good doctor to have follow up/monitoring visits with, and that we would be able to establish a good relationship with them.

On Break, and Babywearing in the hospital...

Hi everyone - I wanted to let you know that there will most likely be little to no content posted here for a while. My two year old, Nathan, threw up Monday morning, had traces of blood in his diarrhea, and was admitted to the hospital Tuesday night. Wednesday morning we were transfered to a larger hospital, and Thursday night we were transferred again.

Nathan has something called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, which means he got a bacteria his body couldn't handle and his kidneys went into shock. The bacteria is gone, but his kidneys are not doing well. He is going to need dialysis, which they cannot do on a pediatric patient at the second hospital we were sent to, so they transferred us via ambulance several hours to our third hospital late last night.

They are saying he seems to be stabilizing, but at this point but he is definitely not improving. Hopefully dialysis will give his body a big boost and turn things around.

Please please pray.

And from last Sunday...

Yesterday, he was only hooked up to an IV, so when he said "mei tai?", I was easily able to put him in my mei tai in a front carry and give him some closeness and snuggles. That was very comforting for both of us. My husband has been doing a lot of wearing too, with our 14 month old. He's been using the mei tai and our HugaMonkey as well to give her some security and comfort and have hands free for carrying bags, etc.

If you know me, you know that I frequently have a baby on my back.

That's how we roll - babywearing makes it easier to snuggle with my babies and get things done.

It was a lifesaver about a year ago when the cows got out into the road and we had to get them back in unassisted and I had to go in and out of ditches and open gates and move quickly, oh, yes, and the baby was hungry, too. Babywearing means I could burn calories marching all over chasing cows, while breastfeeding at the same time. ;) What's not to like? Oh, yeah, the cows were out...

Babywearing isn't just for mamas, though. Micah babywears- one of the many things about him that makes me all weak at the knees. ;)

I think a stretchy wrap is the best newborn carrier of my stash. There is a bit of a learning curve, but the incredible comfort is worth the effort. A friend gave me a Moby wrap for Miriam and I loved it! My second recommendation would be a ring sling. They're great for shorter chunks of time when you don't want to put on the wrap. Plus you can use it well into toddler hood for a hip carry! You can make one (my mom made me my two), or buy one. I also love our mei tai and podaegi, and want to experiment with woven wraps.

Animosity Encounters

"Doesn't that hurt your back?" "He's too old for you to carry him that way." "Make him walk!" "You're going to spoil him."

When we moved to the woods from the city two months ago, I was expecting a slower pace of life. Maybe a small town feeling in the little grove we live in. What I was not expecting was the amount of slightly hostile curiosity I've gotten from my new neighbors when they see me wearing my 12 month old around the grove.

It started the day we moved in. I had Gunne Bear on my front in a Mei Tai while I directed movers with our stuff. As the day wore on, I slapped a sun hat on his head and sang to him until he fell asleep against me. When new neighbors came by to introduce themselves, they seemed surprised to see my 10 month old napping this way. "I'm a kangaroo" I told them jokingly. They didn't seem to get it.

Two days later a gas leak drove us out of the house, again at nap time. This time I used the Moby, wrapped him up and walked down to the beach. I met another new neighbor who expressed surprise that I could tolerate having him on me this way. "I'm one of those hippy-crunchy-granola baby wearer types you read about," I tried joking again. No dice.

My neighbors mounted a not so silent campaign. They stop their cars when they see us walking to ask me pointedly if carrying him on my back hurts. They have reacted in horror when I walk straight into the pond with him on my hip in my special ring sling. I've tried being kind and educating. I've tried being blunt, "If this hurt, do you think I'd be doing it?"

My neighbors and I have reached an impasse. I have no idea why the sight of a woman wearing her toddler annoys them so much, but I have no intention of stopping. I plan on wearing him as long as it's comfortable and beneficial to us both, and if that's another two or even three years, then so be it. Of course in two or three years, we hope to have another little one, so my neighbors may well be treated to the sight of a baby wearing mama for the next 6 years.

Has anyone else encountered such strange animosity? Have any suggestions on how to handle it, short of recruiting hundreds of baby wearers to march through the lanes of our grove? I could use some advice!

DIY Ring Sling with a Twist

When my son was about 6 months old, he'd gotten too big to be carried in a pouch sling across my chest, but we were having trouble shifting to a hip carry. I would get him in, make sure he was seated properly and everything was cool until he got excited about something. He'd start to jump up and down until he popped his butt right out of the bottom of the sling. He never fell, but it made me stick to wraps even for short errands a lot more than I wanted to.
I decided to make my own ring sling that would hold him in there no matter how much he wiggled or squirmed. As an added bonus, I discovered that by wrapping the tail of the sling between his legs and across my back, I had made a sling that took some of the pressure off my shoulder. This meant I could hold him much longer in this sling than I could in standard pouch or ring slings.
This video below demonstrates our sling. If you choose to make one yourself, I used about 3 yards of fabric for mine; you may need more or less depending on your and your baby's size. The rings are sewn to spread the fabric evenly across your shoulder for extra comfort, and I doubled the lightweight fabric over itself for extra strength.

Babywearing Journey

My name is Betsy from Funky Mama Bird. I'm a babywearing mama to a toddler, but did you know that while I intended to use slings and wraps right from birth, I had never heard the term "babywearing" until he was a few months old? I had no idea that there was a whole community out there dedicated to educating women and helping to ensure safe babywearing practices.
During the last year, I've become a huge advocate for babywearing and I'd love to share with you my story.

I was unable to work during my pregnancy, since I'd had a partial placental abruption and was on bed rest. Money got very, very tight and we still had a lot of baby purchases to make. So when it came time to buy the car seat, I wound up considering convertible seats. They would take him from birth to age 10 for one price, rather than having to buy multiple seats. I also found one on super low clearance to meet our budget. There was only one problem: How was I going to carry the baby once he was born, since the seat stayed in the car?

I knew about the Baby Bjorn, and we in fact were given a hand-me-down model, but it didn't look comfortable to me. So I did a little Googling and found the Moby Wrap and a pouch sling. I haunted ebay for a few days until I scored both for cheap and put it out of my mind.

Fast forward to my son's birth. He had somehow gone full term, but he was very small and blue. They wanted him on oxygen, and for me to hold him skin to skin.
I was feeling some major post partum anxiety, my baby is blue with a tiny mask on his face, and I'm trying to keep him to my chest. Things did not feel like they were going well, until I remembered the Moby Wrap. I tied it on and tucked him inside.

It was almost magical how fast my baby settled down and turned pink. He fell asleep pressed to my chest, no one was able to tell I was naked to the waist, and we started breast feeding right inside. I was hooked.

I started wearing him daily. I would tuck him in the wrap and curl up to read. I wore him in the Moby to go for hikes, and I won countless rounds of Mini Golf with him in a Hot Sling. The more I wore him, the more I wanted to; I actually found it addicting. I came to crave the feeling of him in there.

He was a few months old when I learned that there were whole communities out there dedicated to babywearing. Around the same time, safety concerns began to pop up about slings and I became an outspoken advocate for babywearing, writing articles for one of the magazines I work for to help moms (and dads) understand about safe and proper babywearing practices.

I still wear my toddler everyday (and that is a whole other story!) and I still enjoy it and look forward to our outings together. We've added a few more items to our arsenal of wraps and slings and are looking forward to trying out a few more as he gets heavier. I hope to inspire others to give babywearing a try, especially moms with small or sick babies, or moms suffering from post partum anxiety or depression. Babywearing can help you both to thrive.

Love it! What does that look like to you, a mei tai with a tibetan tie? Have you ever needed to babywear in an emergency situation?

I think the closest I can get to that is having to get loose livestock back in, and jogging around in mud boots trying to get our cows contained (and out of the road!) while nursing. That is something you can't do with a stroller, just FYI. ;)

Helpful Videos for Infant Ring Sling Positioning

I don't think it really matters if you froggy the legs, or cross them, as long as you and baby are comfortable. I usually prefer to cross them, because it seems easier to hold feet together gently in one hand as I slide baby down from the burping position into the sling.

So many people are intimidated by the African Kanga and miss out on the simplicity and fun of using it. In fact, I was one of them! I didn't begin using a Kanga for babywearing until this year. I remember the first demonstration video I saw featuring a kanga. My immediate thought was, that doesn't look safe. This was, of course, when I was just beginning to research and explore babywearing with my first child. I was worried about a torso carry. How could something be secure that didn't go over your shoulders? What really frightened me was watching the "twist and tuck" method of tying. What! No knot?! No way was that safe and I wasn't about to try it. What's more is that it looked like it was going to push down on my breasts and/or squish them. I am trying to keep them up! I really didn't want something putting downward pressure on them.

I missed out on nearly five years of babywearing with a kanga because I was afraid to try it. Hello! Women in Africa have been wearing their babies in this fashion for centuries! If it was unsafe, they probably wouldn't be doing it. So, I finally mustered up the guts to try it out with my little guy, affectionately called "The Dude." Granted, my babywearing skills have considerably advanced since my first child, but kangas are not difficult to master. If you can safely do a back carry, then you can carry your baby in a kanga.

Here is the basic back torso carry in an African Kanga with The Dude.

Some people have the misconception that you can only carry a small baby with a kanga, but this is not true at all. I actually thought that carrying my 28 lbs. toddler was really comfortable and quick! In fact, you can even carry a bigger kid like a 5 year old, if you really wanted to. This video shows my 23 month old, "Jellybean" in the torso kanga carry.

Lastly, I have a one-shoulder kanga back carry. This is for all of you who just don't feel comfortable or secure without something over your shoulder. A very simple carry that doesn't require any tricky slip knots.

Stretchy Wraps and Limitations

I just discussed how different carriers can be best for different situations in my last post, but I focused mainly on comfort and the ideal carrier for the situation. I discussed the limitations of a stretchy wrap, in that it isn't best for a larger kiddo, and I mentioned that I prefer to have heavier tots on my back

Now, I have tried back carries with a stretchy wrap in the past with no disasters, and some babywearers do think it is fine. Many suggest that if you just get it tight enough it will be secure. I am not an expert at wrapping, but many more experienced babywearers than myself agree that it isn't safe... and, tellingly, the Moby website no longer has instructions for a back carry. My Moby manual has those instructions... but I hear that new manuals don't. Obviously if Moby is pulling those instructions, they no longer feel that this is a safe use for their product. Their product images haven't quite caught up yet, since that is an Amazon image on the upper left for a Moby D, but maybe eventually those will be gone too.

I have tried back carries with a Moby Wrap, and a Moby D (which has a non stretchy panel designed to help with heavier babies and with back carries- it helped a little but I still felt it wasn't snug or secure or not, especially after a short period, as it would still start to sag.) While you know I love the Moby Wrap, and the Moby D, I don't think either of them, or similar carriers, appropriate for a back carry.

Ok, so I admitted I'm not a wrapping expert... however, I was happy to find these great videos showing better wrapping skills, and showing the same issue. Big thanks to Beth of BabyEtte for tweeting a link to this page with the videos!

Thoughts on Stashes

Some babywearers have one favorite carrier. Others have several that they love. Others, myself included, have specific carriers that we love for specific seasons or purposes. I think of it like a box of art supplies... sometimes, a paintbrush is perfect, other times, you need a charcoal pencil. It all depends on the situation - baby's size, the wearer's size, the length of wearing, the weather, etc.

For example, for that snuggly, wear-all-day, lightweight little newborn, I absolutely love my Moby Wrap*. It is comfortable, you can pop baby in and out for diaper changes, it is soft and snuggly, and it doesn't matter that it takes some tying because you're not taking it on and off a lot, it's staying on for a while.

But for a chunky 2 year old? Well, I could use it, but I wouldn't unless I had no other choice. Having that much weight on my front makes me feel like I'm going to topple over, for one. I know that some think that a stretchy wrap is safe for back carries- I'm sorry, but I cannot agree with that, and here's my post detailing why. For two, I feel that the Moby is just much more comfortable with a smaller baby, for me, that translates into under one. But for those first months, I think it is totally worth it's weight in gold, and the perfect carrier... for that time.

Later, I like a ring sling or pouch for errands (pop on, pop off!) and a ring sling for church (discrete nursing, comfy naps), and a mei tai or podaegi for walks, housework, yardwork, the county fair, etc.

Some carriers can "do it all"... but I would venture to guess that every carrier is ideal for a certain circumstance, and acceptable for others.

About the Podaegi #babywearing

A podaegi (or podeagi, or pod for short) is a a traditional Asian carrier that is similar to a mei tai. Unlike a mei tai (pictured at right), a podaegi only has two straps, located at the top of the carrier. It can have either a large, blanket like body, or a narrower body similar to a mei tai in size.

I was curious about podaegis, so I decided to make one and see if I liked it. First, I made one with a narrower body, using this podaegi tutorial from Sew She Sews.
I chose for simplicity's sake not to use multiple fabrics for the outside, using instead a pretty decorator fabric for the exterior of the body, and lighter fabric for the inside. I used duck cloth for the straps. After it was finished, I was excited to play around with it!

At first I had trouble getting it right... the decorator fabric seemed too stiff, and the blanket seemed too narrow. Once I got the hang of it, it worked well, though. The back carry seemed even easier than a mei tai! Sadly, I didn't get any pictures of the narrow podaegi before I loaned it out, but here is one of my second try, which has a wider body. Not a really really wide one like the Jan Andrea pod (here), but definitely wider than the first. I think the narrow body design was harder to wear correctly... I am very comfortable doing a back carry with my mei tai, but it was a hassle getting the pod spread out when the body was so small. Also, the blanket part of a podaegi isn't weight bearing, so I used lighter weight fabric for the blanket the second time, which is easier to manage. The only thing I would change about my second podaegi would be the straps- I'd make them wider or pad them. They are about 3 1/2 inches wide and after about 20 minutes of a 30 lb toddler they begin to be a little less comfortable on the shoulders.
It does a front or back carry, goes on faster than a wrap or mei tai, and can be used either for my toddler (pictured to left) or my 10 month old. It is great for discreet nursing as well because it is so wide!

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them! This is a really fun carrier and I'm glad to have tried it... I think this one will definitely earn a favored place in my babywearing stash! :)

I am not trying to dwell, babywearers, but I’d like to explain again why the Bjorn and similar carriers are just NOT the best choice! I know that the Bjorn is America’s most popular baby carrier, but that is truly thanks to the company’s massive advertising budget! The fact that practically every baby registry in every big box store (aka Target, Babies R Us, etc…) includes a Bjorn, Infantino, or Jeep baby carrier is a step in the right babywearing direction! But it is also negative progress since most Bjorn-wearing parents will give up babywearing after their baby hits double digits in weight. And why is that, friends? Because the “crotch dangling” baby carriers like the Snugli and the Infantino hold baby in a terribly awkward and uncomfortable position. The baby’s weight puts pressure directly onto a pivotal part of the body – the crotch! And whether a baby girl or a baby boy is being worn, this cannot be comfortable or ergonomic! Not only that, but I am convinced that the manufacturers of these crotch dangling baby carriers have actually never worn one of their own baby carriers! If the manufacturers behind the Bjorn had ever tried actually used their own Bjorn, I think that we would see a huge re-design in their line of carriers! The brains behind Baby Bjorn , Jeep, & Chicco would then experience for themselves the ill-fitting shoulder straps and the lack of back & shoulder support needed in a truly GREAT baby carrier!

My guess is that someone has pointed out to these business owners the ergonomic value of baby carriers like the BabyHawk or the Beco leading to the release of the Infantino’s own Mai Tei product, the Wrap ‘n Tie, and Bjorn’s “invention” of a Beco Gemini – esque carrier complete with a waistband, padded straps, & the quintessential Baby Bjorn front facing out capability. Here is what Bjorn has to say about their new Comfort Carrier:

BABYBJÖRN Comfort Carrier is an ergonomic baby carrier that provides the best possible support when carrying a bigger and older child for extended periods of time. The waist belt and the padded, adjustable shoulder straps distribute baby’s weight evenly onto your hips and shoulders. Baby Bjorn has obviously been doing their babywearing homework, and they have discovered what features are most important to us. However, this large manufacturer has made 1 very large error! They have priced this new ergonomic Bjorn at around $200 retail, and that is a BIG mistake! $200 could be spent on a gorgeous wrap conversion, a custom Mai Tei, or a legacy half buckle SSC that will go down in babywearing history! But $200 spent on a China-made, Beco/ Ergo wanna-be with a Baby Bjorn label and a BRUS store receipt? I don't think so, Baby Bjorn!

How can you fight back?

By promoting baby carriers that we know, trust, and deserve to carry your baby!

Wear your WAHM made baby carrier with pride!

Pass out business cards to your favorite mom-owned baby carrier shop!

Urge your mommy friends to register for a GREAT baby carrier instead of a mediocre one!

Let a new parent borrow your own baby carrier and give a quick tutorial so that they can have a GREAT experience with it!

Smile at Baby Bjorn wearing parents, and slyly say “Did you know there is a carrier even MORE comfortable than that one!?!”

And most importantly wear your baby with confidence: let the whole world know that you are a BABYWEARER!

DIY Carrier Resources...

As a look at my stash will tell you, I've made most of my carriers. At first, it was because I didn't know if I would like specific ones, and couldn't imagine paying the prices for a good one until I at least knew I liked it. As I gained experience and confidence, I continued making them because none of our trees grow money, and I loved being able to experiment and make something usable and durable. I frequently get questions about making carriers, so I thought I'd round up some good resources that I've used...

Ring Sling

I have one Maya Wrap (pictured to left) style sling from this pattern, which is a great sling, and one sling from Jan Andrea's pattern. They are both great carriers but I think that Jan's sling tends to be a little easier to get comfy on my shoulder. I have ordered all my rings from SlingRings.com, and have been very happy with both their quality, selection, and service. It is essential to use good strong rings, not weak craft rings that may break under pressure!

Mei Tai

I've used Jan Andrea's pattern, tweaking the body size to fit me. Love her easy to follow directions! That is my second one, to the right.

Podaegi

I've made two, one (loosely) from this pattern, then one with a much wider body but that same basic headrest.

Wraps

So far I have had NO success finding stretchy wrap material, to my disappointment! I love my Moby Wrap and wanted to be able to make a similar wrap to gift to new moms, but all the fabrics I'm finding either feel too thin, or are super stretchy and not cotton. I have only been able to find doubleknit 100% cotton jersey one place online, in brick orange. Any ideas there, readers?

As far as non stretchy wraps go, I made this one. I am happy with it, but I'd like to upgrade to a linen or other nice woven wrap this summer. We'll see if funds permit.

I've been reading threads in the DIY forum of the Babywearer about woven wraps... so helpful! The Babywearer is a great resource for babywearers, and their DIY forum is great as well...I definitely highly recommend it if you are interested in making carriers! :)

Small print: All the resources I link to (I think) discuss safe sewing techniques and fabric selection, but I'll just reiterate, chose sturdy, appropriate weight fabrics, rings designed for slings (not crafts), and good quality thread, and make sure to really reinforce and top stitch weight bearing seams. Container Babies, Part II

I ended up, to my total shock and delight, with this...

This gem popped up on my twitter feed this week from PhD in Parenting...

It was not my intent in my original post to convey disapproval of those with babies with bald spots, or even flat spots. I know people whose babies have bald spots, and flat spots, and one who needed a helmet. It isn't always because they're sitting in a bouncy seat all day. No. And it isn't always an actual issue, at all, if it is just a bald spot. They might just be restless little sleepers, and rub their heads back and forth in their sleep.

But it could be an indicator of something, and it could be a sign of an issue. The term "container babies" wasn't thought up by a babywearing fanatic, or an attachment parent... this is something that neurologists, doctors, and physical therapists are talking about, and it is something that parents should be aware of as well. We're becoming more aware of the risks of leaving babies in carseats when they're not in the car, and of overusing modern baby gadgets, and that is a good thing. I like to refer to this as "science/medicine catching up with common sense." ;)

It was my intent to raise awareness, to convey information about something that is a serious issue. It is true that I feel babywearing is the tool to fix the issue of container babies. It may not fix baldness, it may not eliminate flat spots, but those are cosmetic. Misshapen skulls, contorted neck muscles and delayed motor skills are far, far more worrisome.

Maybe I shouldn't have brought my personal experience into the post at all... really, it was just anecdotal evidence, which isn't the same caliber of information at all. And it seems like that was what most objected to in my post. Oops. Well, either way, I'm glad that you all stopped by, and I hope that you'll become regulars. Container Babies

Doctors and physical therapists around the country have coined a new term for babies who spend too much time in devices like carriers, swings and bouncy seats. They are calling it "container syndrome." According to an article published in the Chicago Tribune, these containers are causing an increase in cases of misshapen skulls, contorted neck muscles and delayed motor skills, like crawling and walking. A recent study conducted by the Pathways Awareness Foundation, a non-profit group that promotes early detection of movement delays, found two-thirds of physical and occupational therapists say they've seen an increase in movement delays in the past six years. The group surveyed 400 therapists.

- Get Container Babies Off Their Backs!

"Tummy time" is promoted as the solution to this issue, but many babies don't like it, and it's difficult to fit it in when you're running all around town... however, many people in the babywearing world believe babywearing is the same as tummy time, including Dr. Maria Blois. Many of the same muscles are used, and it also gets baby off their back, so helps avoid the flattening on the back of the head.

Keeping babies strapped down in these "containers" prevents them from using all the muscles they need to grow normally. "Any of these devices that are developed to provide basically convenience for the parents, such as seats for feeding and some of the other play saucers and things like that, and play mobiles and things where the child basically is entertained by lying on their back and looking up also puts considerable amount of pressure on the back of the head and then causes a flattening there," Carl Barr, D.O., a child neurologist in Orlando, Fla., explained to Ivanhoe. He added, "If you're not put in a position where you have to maintain your head because it's resting on some other device, then you don't develop the strength in those muscles."

- Get Container Babies Off Their Backs!

I have had people stop me in the grocery store to admire my babies heads... people have specifically noted that they don't have flat spots or bald spots. There is a reason for that... it is because my babies don't spend most of their awake time on their backs in bouncy seats, or lying in a crib watching a mobile. They spend it either playing on their tummies on the floor, or on my back or chest in a carrier... close to mama, soaking in cuddle time and watching whatever I'm doing with wide eyes. Watching Mama wash dishes is pretty exciting when you're a baby! ;)

Edited to add...

The Back to Sleep campaign, while it has reduced SIDS rates, has likely contributed to some babies having some flatness or baldness. Now, I held my first child for most of his naps, and wore my daughter for most of hers when they were small, and my 11 month old prefers to sleep on her stomach, so I'm sure there is a possibility that one or both of them would've had a little baldness or flatness had I put them down on their backs for their naps and at night. Also, generally my babies have slept on their sides a lot at night due to cosleeping and breastfeeding. So obviously, there are a lot of factors that can affect whether a baby has flatness or baldness.

BUT.

"[C]ontainers are causing an increase in cases of misshapen skulls, contorted neck muscles and delayed motor skills, like crawling and walking."

That is a very serious issue and was the main point of my post... which is that for our babies *health*, "containers" aren't best for babies.

Megan over at Sorta Crunchy had a great post recently on babywearing advocacy after the Infantino Slingrider recall. She counsels, " Wear your baby with pride in public, and go prepared with a gracious and gentle script for countering the comments of those who seek to make you feel guilty for practicing this ancient and effective art."

I so agree, and would just add, have the principles of safe babywearing in your head, ready to explain. See each encounter as an opportunity to, possibly, educate and enlighten someone as to the value of babywearing, and how to do so safely!

Infantino Recalls to Replace SlingRider Baby Slings; Three Infant Deaths Reported
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC), in cooperation with Infantino LLC, of San Diego, Calif. are announcing a free replacement program for the Infantino “SlingRider” and “Wendy Bellissimo” infant slings. One million of these infant slings are being recalled in the United States and 15,000 are being recalled in Canada. CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using these slings for infants younger than four months of age due to a risk of suffocation and contact Infantino for a free replacement product.
CPSC is aware of three reports of deaths that occurred in these slings in 2009; a 7-week-old infant in Philadelphia, Pa.; a 6-day-old infant in Salem, Ore.; and a 3-month-old infant in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Infantino “SlingRider,” is a soft fabric baby carrier with a padded shoulder strap that is worn by parents and caregivers to carry an infant weighing up to 20 lbs. “Infantino” is printed on the plastic slider located on the strap. “Infantino,” “SlingRider” and the item number are printed on the instruction/warning label inside the baby sling carrier. “Wendy Bellissimo” branded sling carriers were sold exclusively at Babies “R” Us and have a sewn-in label on the inside of the sling strap that says in part "Wendy Bellissimo Media, Inc." and lists Item numbers 3937500H7 and 3937501H7.
Infantino LLC sold the slings in the United States and Canada from January 2003 through March 2010 at Walmart, Burlington Coat Factory, Target, Babies “R” Us, BJ’s Wholesale, various baby and children’s stores and other retailers nationwide, and on the Web at Amazon.com, for between $25 and $30.
The product was manufactured in China and Thailand.
Consumers should stop using the recalled slings immediately and contact Infantino to receive a free replacement product, with a choice of a Wrap & Tie infant carrier, or a 2 in 1 Shopping Cart Cover, or a 3 in 1 Grow & Play Activity Gym. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

This is my favorite mei tai EVER, and I just got it back from a mama who borrowed it for a few months. Now she is enjoying the podaegi instead. :) I don't really like outfacing carries, like this, but he wanted to see the world so we tried it out. Now that I'm more experienced, though, we prefer back carries. Not to mention that this chunky baby is now an almost two year old, and not being worn on the front at all- way too heavy!

Sling Safety, Bag Slings, and the CPSC

Maybe you've seen some of the headlines or news stories recently...

"CPSC Issues Warning After Baby Sling Death"

"Baby Sling Deaths: 'Chic' Baby Slings Linked To At Least 13 Infant Deaths, Government Says"

"U.S. warns parents on baby slings"

So what does that all mean? Is your carrier safe? Should you continue babywearing?

First, if you own the type of sling pictured, please DO NOT use it! If you have one of these slings, please just throw it away - don't even donate it to a thrift store.
"The popular "SlingRider" by Infantino has been singled out for criticism because of the curved position that the baby can fall into while inside the sling. According to court documents, little Derrik Fowler was in an Infantino sling when he died and his parents are suing the company."

You can read more about these "bag slings" and their risks to babies here. I don't know what type of sling was being used in each of the 13 tragedies, but in at least two of them it was a "bag sling" like the one on the left. These are dangerous because they put the baby in a curved position, with chin to chest, and make it harder for the baby to breathe. Also, the elasticized sides can be a suffocation hazard, and make it harder to check on baby. In one of the deaths, the mother was unaware that anything was wrong until she opened the bag sling. Your baby's face should NEVER be covered by fabric!

Jan Andrea's page on sling safety notes, "You should always be able to see your baby's head and face, without opening the fabric to do so, and he should always be able to breathe freely and easily, with his neck straight and his head in a neutral position (not curled forward onto his chest)."

To the left is a photo of a baby being worn safely in a Moby Wrap. Note that the baby is close to the wearer's face ("close enough to kiss") and has no fabric on her face.

Bottom line? Slings, used safely, are safe. Here are some safety guidelines from Babywearing International:

"A correctly-used baby carrier's positioning should mimic how you would hold a baby in your arms. A normal in-arms holding position is fairly snug to your chest and somewhat close to your face ("Close Enough to Kiss"). Babywearing advocates have been teaching about the importance of correct newborn positioning for years and warning against the use of slings that do not allow for safe wearing positions.

Here are some important guidelines to remember when wearing an infant:
Check to ensure that your baby is not curled up tightly in a chin-to-chest position; this compresses your baby's airway. Making sure there is a fingers' width or two between their chin and chest is a good guide.
Make sure your baby's back is straight and supported.
Monitor your child at all times. Make sure nothing is obstructing their face.
Be aware of how your movements affect the baby: avoid any bumping or jarring motions."

Back Wrap Cross Carry

With a snuggly, floppy little newborn, many people prefer to wear their baby on their chest - near the heart and food source, easily kissable and cuddly. But once your baby gets bigger, a back carry is pretty appealing.

You can be on the go with your happy kiddo, like a backpack!

Especially convenient for dishes and other tasks that are right in front of you! :)

This video shows how to do a Back Wrap Cross Carry (or BWCC) with a one month old... I've never done a back carry with that young of a baby, but whenever #3 comes along I plan on investing the time and effort into learning how. The technique is basically the same with an older baby or toddler, though, just easier because you don't have to worry about head/neck support, and you can use different techniques to get them on your back. Here are step by step written instructions with photos for the BWCC, with older baby/toddler, with the toss method of putting bebe on your back.

Why I love babywearing...

There are many reasons I love babywearing- convenience, ease of nursing discreetly in public, the fun of learning new carries, the ability to take a baby (or two) out in public and still have free hands to open doors and push shopping carts...

But I think my favorite thing about babywearing is the connection. The moments, like above, where I am able to go about my day, throwing a load in the washer and washing a few dishes, while simultaneously cuddling my baby as she wakes up, feeling her putting her head down on my back while hearing her coo as she snuggles and watches the world around us from the safety of mama and the wrap.

Yesterday evening, I raced out of the house, running a bit late for a mom's meeting. I had been behind all day, the toddler had mysteriously not napped at all, and I had a severe case of cabin fever (this snow!), so I knew I had to get out but wasn't doing a good job of mobilizing self and baby (toddler stayed home with daddy.)

So I forgot my sling. And didn't even have my #2 choice, my mei tai. And we had ONE egg in the fridge at home, so not popping in the store after the meeting wasn't an option. But it was bedtime, and I had a snuggly little baby who needed some cuddle time.

So, what's a girl to do? Thankfully, I have an "emergency" carrier stashed in the outer pocket of my diaper bag! This little number saved the day!

I even had a chance to talk about wraps with a new dad... so if you or the new mama are reading, congratulations! And this post is for you. :)

I mentioned that I made this carrier, and here are some simple directions on how to make a wrap. Since your baby is a new arrival, you probably want a stretchy wrap, like the moby wrap - we love ours!

You can purchase one from Amazon, or you can make one easily yourself, which is appealing because you're going to spend almost $40 to purchase one, but they're easy to make. Here are some simple instructions to make a no sew, inexpensive wrap for baby.

Ok, so now you know how to buy or make one... but how do you use this long, long piece of fabric? If you purchase the Moby Wrap, it does come with a helpful instruction manual, but here is a helpful youtube video (and there are lots of others) showing how to put it on and how to do a few basic carries.

(I will say, for the record, that I'm not a huge fan of the facing outward position, although sometimes my older baby, like around 6 months, really wanted to see the world and I would use it. It just doesn't look the most comfortable for baby or best for their spine- looks too reminiscent of the Baby Bjorn type carrier to me. You can read my post on Bjorn? Ergo? Beco? for more info on the problems with Bjorn type carriers.)

Nursing in a Woven Wrap

This looks like a helpful video for nursing in a non stretchy wrap. I wish I had seen it months ago! Now my little one (10 months) doesn't need to nurse as often, and wants to be on the go more than she wants to be worn, so she isn't nursing in the carrier as often.

Bjorn? Ergo? Beco?

Here is a good page addressing the problems with the Baby Bjorn as compared to the Ergo. While the BabyBjorn has the status factor and name recognition, it isn't as comfortable for the parent or the baby.

It doesn't allow for a back carry (unlike the Beco and Ergo)
it dangles the baby from their crotch instead of spreading out their weight across their bottoms
it doesn't split the weight on you between the back and shoulders
it only goes up to22 lbs.

This site has a glowing review of the ERGO from a former BabyBjorn user, in a piece entitled "7 Things to Look for When Buying a Baby Carrier or Baby Sling":

"And by the time she was 16 lbs. I found that carrying her in the Baby Bjorn was causing pain in my shoulders and upper back and even a tingling sensation in my neck. I now realize that a truly comfortable carrier, like The ERGO Baby Carrier I now use, has two padded shoulder straps and a padded waist/hip belt. This configuration distributes the baby's weight in a way that our bodies can handle it. When you think about it, it is not unlike what a hiker would look for in a good back pack."

And this article notes,

Any carrier that positions your baby upright with most of the support located in the crotch could cause spondylolisthesis. Putting so much stress on the spine can hinder proper spinal development.

If I were in the market for a structured carrier, I'd definitely go with either the Beco or the Ergo.

Sew She Sews has a very cute one pattern to make a podaegi here, and Jan Andrea has one here.

What is a podaegi, or podeagi (or a "pod" for short)? It is a traditional Asian carrier that is similar to a mei tai.

And here is a front carry, although I have to note that she ties the straps in a bow, I would much prefer a square knot for safety.

Snuggly Newborn Carrier...

I love the Moby Wrap! We were given one when my youngest was about four months, and it quickly became the favorite carrier. Now that she is 9 months, we prefer the mei tai so we can do back carries, but next time we have a newborn in the house I know that the wrap is going to get a lot of use. The moby is soft, amazingly comfortable for mama and bebe, and although it does take a bit of getting on it really is totally worth it.

black with toddler, grey with daddy, owl design, natural... so pretty!

and as you can see from all these pictures, this is a very versatile carrier!

Babywearing Safety

If you're on Facebook, go become a fan of Babywearing Safety! They're doing a great job of posting photos of correct and incorrect positioning, and other wonderful safety tips. One of the best things they're doing is raising awareness of the dangers of "bag style" slings. Here is a bit from them on that:

Any bag style carrier that resembles a duffel bag, with a flat bottom and two sides that slant upwards towards an elasticized or padded top, is inherently unsafe and should never be used for a newborn or small baby.

1) The bag carrier forces baby into a prone, C-shape position, tucking baby's chin to chest and potentially impeding breathing.

2) Even if a mesh panel is present, the baby's head being enclosed in fabric may cause baby to rebreathe her exhalations that are high in carbon dioxide.

3) It is difficult if not impossible for parents to view their babies' faces at all times and monitor breathing.

4) Babies may roll towards the side of the carrier and end up with their faces pressed into fabric, obstructing breathing.

Very important info to get out, since the bag style slings are VERY common and easy to find at major retailers. I wish the Maya Wrap and BabyHawk were as easy to find instead!

Yesterday, I purchased 5 yards of fabric, washed and dried it, and wrapped it up! We are loving the new wrap, and although I still need to taper the ends, and hem or serge the whole thing, I love it! Very very comfortable and distributes my heavy baby's 15 lbs very well across my whole back. This would also make a great, very secure carrier for an infant.

Some of the most common questions I get when wearing my baby in a ring sling in public are, "Where did you get that?" and "Did you make that?" (The other FAQ is usually "Is that comfortable?" and the answer is, yes! the fabric distributes the baby's weight across your shoulder and back if you spread it out correctly!)

There are two ways to get yourself a ring sling. You can buy one, or you can make one (or ask a friend or family member who sews to make one for you). If you make one, be sure to select a good quality fabric, and think about whether it is something you'll want to wear a lot! Also be sure to order safety tested rings. "Craft rings" are NOT strong enough! A good place to order rings is SlingRings.com - they have an excellent selection of colors and you can choose either classy metal ones (I love the bronze!) or sleek plastic. I've ordered from them twice and been very happy with both the product and service!

If you are going to buy one, I would recommend the Maya Wrap or a similar sling. Regular priced Maya Wraps are 65.95 each, however, if you check their clearance section you can find gently used or discontinued slings for less. The one pictured is in a discontinued fabric and is priced at $59.95... not much less than the full priced Maya Wrap, but isn't it pretty? I love this color!

Maybe you're thinking that $60 is a lot of money to spend for a baby carrier, especially one that is basically fabric and rings. Well, yes and no. Yes, it is expensive, and yes, this is something that someone with sewing skills and a sewing machine can do on their own. However, if you can't make one yourself, this is a bargain. Would you pay this much (or close to it) for a stroller?

A ring sling is much more versatile than a stroller!

It makes it easier to tote a baby up stairs, escalators, through uneven terrain, through crowds, on grass, at the park, at the playground, while chasing an older sibling, while taking a small baby shopping... and the list goes on and on. You can look at the Maya Wrap photo gallery for some great images of happy babies (and toddlers!) being worn in ring slings. A ring sling will be able to be used for a longer period of time than any bouncy seat or bassinet, your baby will most likely be more content in the sling anyway for long periods of time, and in addition to all this, after you've been babywearing for a while you'll probably be able to figure out how to breastfeed your baby in the sling, so that you can discreetly and conveniently nurse wherever you and baby are.

So whether you buy or make a ring sling, this is an excellent and versatile carrier that you and your baby can enjoy together for a long time. It adjusts easily for different parents and other caregivers to use, & when you're done babywearing, if it is in good shape, you can sell it or share it with a new mama! :)
